Things you can do now

If you have done the restriction route before, you already know how it ends. So this guide asks you to remove nothing. Every item below is something you add, today, without buying anything and without giving anything up. That is not a softer version of a diet. It is a different starting point.

Why addition first

Taking things away puts your body and your resolve on opposite sides, and one of them gets tired. Adding does the opposite: it crowds the day with things that steady you, and the changes you were bracing for tend to start happening on their own. Nothing here has to be finished, perfected, or done every day to count.

Six additions

Pick one. Start there.

  1. 1. Add a glass of water before your first coffee. Not instead of. Before. Overnight is the longest stretch you go without drinking, and the fog that follows it is easy to mistake for needing more caffeine.
  2. 2. Add protein to the meal you usually skip past. An egg, a handful of nuts, whatever is already in your kitchen. You are not changing the meal, you are giving it something to hold on to.
  3. 3. Add ten minutes outside, ideally early. A walk around the block counts. Morning light is one of the simplest signals you can give a body that has lost track of its own rhythm.
  4. 4. Add one vegetable you actually like to dinner. The one you like. Liking it is the point: something you enjoy needs no discipline to survive the second week.
  5. 5. Add a pause before you eat. Three slow breaths, sitting down, before the first bite. It is the shortest possible version of arriving at your own meal.
  6. 6. Add a note of what you notice. Not what you ate. What you noticed: energy, mood, sleep, how a meal sat. Two lines. Noticing is the skill everything else is built on.

Six is the list, not the assignment. One of them, most days, for a couple of weeks, is a real start.
